Nowhere near as important as carbs, though. Some possible benefits as a pre-race, but fairly low-grade benefits. A good protein with balanced amino acids is useful in the daily ration. The best being whey protein. Some horses, like some people, are lactose intolerant, though, and the preventative approach would include lactanase in the mix.
