RE: [RC] Selling horses - Libby & Quentin Llop DVM

I think you should tell buyers that they can have 2 out of 3 , sound, well
trained or cheap. Let them take their choice. Libby

You want to hear a good one, Don?
I had someone very well known in endurance who wanted one of my best mares
for $1200. She was 4 and I had over that in feed in her. I said no way could
I sell her for that, to which he replied that Val Kanavy had bought Cash for
$500 (boy I sure wish I had a dime for every time I have heard that from
some endurance buyers) and he went on to say that most endurance people
would not spend more than $1200 on a prospect and frequently find bargain
horses that turn out to be great endurance horses.
I pointed out to him that there are times that people go to garage sales and
find priceless paintings for sale that the owner is unaware of their value
and charges virtually nothing-- or jewelery-- or antiques. HOWEVER, would
someone go to a retailer, someone who specialized is fine jewelry or art and
say "I want to make you an offer for your merchandise at less than half what
it cost you"-- I can imagine what Macy's or Robinsons would say to that.
Then this well known person said-- and I kid you not!--- "If you sell to me,
endurance riders look at what I am riding and will want to come to you to
buy their next horse. " To which I replied "Let me get this straight and
check my wallet to see if I was born yesterday. I am to sell you one of my
best mares for below my cost in feeding her to date (not even factoring in
the training) with the hopes that more endurance people who you just said
don't spend over $1200 will come and offer me the same terms on my other
horses for sale."
Sounds like something out of Catch 22, huh? Or Saturday Night Live??
Now I also have to add that not all endurance people, fortunately, are like
that and have paid me a fair price for my horses-- at least something that
we both can live with :-)

Hello Nicki,
I like a good deal just like everybody else but if a buyer is so rude as
to expect you to sell them a finished, sound endurance horse for a
ridiculous $1500 then here is what your reply to them could be. Years
ago in a Montana feed store I saw this sign over the cash register to
discourage wheeler-dealers types from haggling with the owner. "IF YOU
WANT TOP QUALITY OATS THEN YOU MUST PAY A FAIR PRICE BUT IF YOU WANT
OATS THAT HAVE ALREADY PASSED THRU THE HORSE THEN I WILL GIVE YOU A
SPECIAL DEAL!" Don't be afraid to verbally slap those rude morons
around. Hell it costs $2000 just to feed hay to a horse for 5 years plus
worming, vaccinations, shoes, training, tell them to go shop at a ranch
in their price range.
