RE: [RC] Hot shoeing - Lauren E. Reitz

If he burnt your mare until she was lame, then he was awful to begin with
and didn't do it properly. The shoe should not be so hot that it sears
through the foot and causes pain, only enough to singe in the clips and
blacken the high spots. Don't let one farrier's inexperience turn you off of
a practice that could help one of your horses someday. A very skilled cold
shoer can do a good job, but the shoes will still not be seated as tightly
as a good hot shoeing. Even the tiniest of spaces will allow movement
between the shoe and the hoof as small as it might be can contribute to
loose shoes after thousands of steps.

A shoer burned my mare's feet while hot shoeing. I know this isn't suppose
to happen but it did. She was lame and sore for a couple of weeks. I now
have a new shoer who said he only does hot shoeing. I firmly told him "no"
and he cold shoes my horses. He says I am the only person he cold shoes for
but so be it. And he does a terrific job. I will never let a shoer hot shoe
again. Be careful.
