I tried that with my boy, but as he is 22 and never been with a mare herd, he was not respectful of "no." He's a very quiet and good horse most of the time, but the screaming and chasing was more than I or our neighbors could take. 
 
So he can see and talk to the mares, but not be in with them. I think raising them that way is great, but it's hard to change them once they've learned something else.
