Re: [RC] Calling out to other horses ??? - Diane Trefethen

The first few trail rides Oro and I went on he will sometimes call and whiney so long and loud his entire body shakes...

Do I ignore this and allow him the freedom to do that . . . or do I circle him or give him some distracting exercise to put his mind back on me?

I think all horses want to do that but I try to train mine not to. When they call, which isn't very often, I growl at them and sometimes cuff them on the neck. In hand and under saddle I want my horse to be paying attention to the tasks at hand and calling for other horses demonstrates that his mind is NOT where it needs to be. On the trail, my horse and I need to be a "herd" so if he's calling for/to another horse, then again that's where HE is, not with me.
