[RC] newbie question re time limits in endurance v. ctr - Marta Kozlowska

can someone please explain to this newbie why are the time limitis in endurance longer than in ctr?
i'm a newbie to both disciplines. i did my first 30 mile ctr last may. loved it! from what i recall the time allowed to finish was between 4 hours and 45 minutes and 5 hours and 15 minutes and that included the mid point vet check.  i'm thinking of entering a ride at the end of november which is sanctioned by aerc. the ride info indicates that 8 hours are allocated for the 30 mile. am i reading something wrong? is there really that much time given to finish 30 miles? i'm not complaining, i'm just trying to understand why the difference?
thanks!
marta
