Federal Bill Address Disaster Plans for Companion Animals

Local and state emergency preparedness authorities will have to
include in their evacuation plans how they will accommodate household
pets or service animals in case of a disaster, according to a bill
introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on September 22nd.

The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R.
3858) will require local and state authorities to submit disaster
relief plans that including planning for animals, in order to qualify
for grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

While the language of the bill requires only that companion animals be
considered in emergency planning efforts, it is the first time that
the federal government has recognized the integral role of companion
animals in family life.

Please call your U.S. Representative today to indicate your approval
of H.R. 3858, requiring emergency planning to include companion
