[RC] [RC] Hay--How Much to Feed? Feed x Weight, not Volume - Tina Rushing

Consider the weight (in pounds), not number of flakes. There is a lot of
variance between types of hay. Rye and grass hay bales will usually have
very light flakes (4-5 pounds). A flake of alfalfa can be *very* heavy. I
am feeding a good grass/alf mix and find that with this mix there can be a
lot of flake-weight variance even within a single bale, even though the alf
ratio is only about 10%.

Of course only a certified nut-case would *weigh* individual hay feedings.
oops! cat's out of the bag!

when replying because it is very painful to scroll through repetitive
digests. The original message below is clipped, and it seems clear enough
to me, but clarity to a nut-case is relative. Is it time for my meds?

... I've been giving her 4 flakes which seems to last her throughout the
night. Sometimes she'll eat it all, but not always. My friend feels I
should only give her 2 flakes to see her thru the night. I personally don't
feel this is quite enough...
