[RC] Last feedback on teff hay - andreab

Just a last word from my side. As with any feed nutrition levels differ! I am
from South
Africa and the greater part of the country only feed teff hay to their horses
as it is the
only reliable source of forage other than Alfalfa available. In the Western
Cape area
oathay has always been the only forage available but this is slowly changing.
More and
more farmers are switching to planting Teff as horse owners are increasingly
wanting to
rather feed teff than oathay as the C:P balance is correct, wheras in oathay
the P levels
are very high and C very low.

THe protein levels in South African teff is not high. Certainly not over 10%.
THis has
been tested and confirmed by various reputable nutrition specialists. If it
was high we
South African endurance riders would have a serious problem with tying up! The
levels of
the other minerals etc would very much depend on the area it is grown in.
Ultimately the
soil dictates!

Maybe we can have some feedback from British ridecampers? My British friend
seems to
think that Teff is pretty much what gets fed over there.
