I can identify with that too Mary. I am taking lessons on a very good well
trained Morgan, forget what level dressage. He is so good that you must use
the correct cue, perfect for training someone who needs to learn to use
their legs correctly, like me!

Yes The arena in some respects scares as much or more than a trail. The
trail I feel I have control over where my horse is going and I trust a trail
horse or I wouldn't be on it. Speed is another issue, I have to work into
that. But have done it before I got hurt. Anyway, what I think I have a
problem with in regards to arena's is not the horse, and I have seen some
crazy dressage horse and wouldn't touch them with someone. But anyway, the
issue for me is that I worry about the horse spooking into the fence! Or
stumbling and me going into the fence. Or as learn basics of riding a jump,
I worry about the horse falling but that one so far wouldn't be different
than falling during a canter or trot. Also, at this location I don't worry
about dogs. But in other locations I would if I wasn't sure of the owners
control over those dogs. I have had that experience too! Dog running out
and getting horse in the back leg and this horse getting it's very first
ride! Well yes and the spook, if a big one, would that horse crash the
fence!

So in reality, no matter where we ride, our home pasture, fence posts to
fall on, into, fences, gopher holes. On the trail, limbs in our faces,
tearing out head off, thru the helmet ripping our head off cause the strap
holds! Falling down that steep slope! Then what do we do, we have to take
a deep breath and deal with our fear, relax so we help the horse not to have
those accidents and be aware that we ride sane horses, not the crazy freaky
kind. At least the morgan I am riding has trail experiences too. His owner
can't imagine why dressage riders (and she is one) are so afraid of taking
their horses out on trails, she thinks it would make them better horses, but
they don't think so!

OK, sorry this is long, but that was my thoughts after reading your email.
So hang in there gal.

May you have plety of good safe riding for 2005 and beyond!
Jo Ann
