[RC] hindquarter cramping? - Mary Krauss

After a very hilly ride the other day, I discovered a fist-sized knot, hard as a rock, just to the side of my gelding's rump. I assume this is a muscle cramp from walking too many hills but want to know what you all think. Also, if it is a cramp (disappeared overnight), what can one do about it upon discovery, and, is this something I have to worry about in the future?

He is just getting back into shape--I've been bringing him along quite slowly (ok, I overrode him one day a month ago....), but this ride has impressive and non-stop hills. We'd gone about six miles, mostly walking. He always stretches his back periodically, but, the last mile he kept putting his nose all the way to the ground like one of those "peanut-rollers" you all joke about. Do you think this behavior was linked to the mysterious lump/cramp and so could have been a signal I should have noticed?

Thank you for your ideas.

Mary K.
