Re: [RC] Training advice - Maureen A. Fager

Is the horse still in the trailer? I had a similar situation with my mare, the first time she rode in a slantload with a tackroom in the back, she could not figure out how to get out of it. After trying ways simialar to what you described, my friend and I put a lung line on each side of her halter, stood out of the trailer to the sides, and used the lung lines as reins to back her out. We used this method for several trips before she learned how to make the corner to back out of this paticular trailer. This method worked but be carefull to not put yourself in danger when putting on the lines or being behind the horse when asking it to come out.

I have also used the other method suggested--ie, teaching the horse to back up over obstacles, with obstacles that had some sort of drop, from shallow drops to deeper drops, be helpfull too. I also back horses out of places, like from the inside of the barn to the outside, inside of stall into barn alley ways ect.

Good luck!
Maureen
