[RC] Riding in Fairground arenas (A Montana experience) - Christy Hawes

I read about staying at fairgrounds and wanted to post a warning.

In Kalispell, Montana I put on a horse show at the local FAIRGROUNDS using the sand arena (only big arena). Sounds OK, right? Well, come to find out that same arena is used for the demolition derby!! There were pieces of metal in that sand!! I had a friend's horse get a piece of metal in his foot during a show class. Horse was luckily not hurt. Rider won't ride there anymore.

Something you might want to ask about before using a Fairgrounds arena- especially in the smaller towns. Can you say LIABILTY when putting on a show??!! but, what do you do....

I've done a lot of long distance traveling with horses in the west. I highly recommend local fairgrounds and rodeo arenas. Almost every small town in Nebraska and west has a rodeo arena. Mitchell, NB, just west of Scotts Bluff and almost into WY has a very nice fairgrounds. Occasionally I have been asked to pay about $10 but often staying is free! You might have to walk your horses around to find some grass but it usually isn't hard to find. Unless there is an event going on, we would turn our horses out in the arena (after first checking to make sure ALL the gates are closed) for some run around time. Often you can pull your rig up close to the pens the horses are in. We've found the rodeo grounds just by pulling into a filling station and asking. Folks have always been friendly and willing to help horse people.
Have a great trip!

Nina Barnett and I are driving from western North Carolina to Idaho beginning this Saturday. We will have two horses and a 33 foot rig. We would like to overnight between St. Louis and Columbia, MO on Saturday night not far off Highway 70. On Sunday night, we would like to stay near the Wyoming border in Nebraska not far off highway 80. We would like to be able to put the horses in paddocks with grass, or cordon off a section of pasture with out electric corrals to give the horses some greens and a way to stretch their legs. We would also like to plug the trailer into some electricity. If there is anyone willing to put us up for the night it will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for any help or suggestions. We are also consulting the Overnight Stabling Directory but are pinching as many pennies as we can.
