Even simpler ... I just grab the dog by the top of the muzzle and lift --  
the bottom jaw drops open and I quickly insert the pill as far back as I can 
get it.  With my Great Danes I can pretty much jam the pill down into their 
stomach :-).  A bit more finesse is need with my Pomeranians -- I usually 
push the pill back as far as possible an follow up with a syringe filled 
with water to make sure they swallow the thing.

The key to success is taking them by surprise.   If they know its coming its 
a whole different ballgame.
