Re: [RC] fractured tibia - Barbara McCrary

This brought a memory back.... My husband was in a body cast many years ago for a herniated disk. Of course it itched horribly, so I put the hose on the discharge end of the vacuum cleaner and blew cool air down inside of the cast using the crevice tool. It worked!

Take it easy, catch up on your reading! (may I suggest Julie Suhr's book if
you haven't read it yet...) Keep your leg elevated, especially when you
sleep. It will help with the swelling. Not sure what kind of cast you have
but you might want to ice above and below your cast to help with swelling.
If it gets ichy DO NOT try to scratch it with anything. When you are in a
cast your skin doesn't get air to it and it gets really moist and can tear
easily (IE don't use a clothes hanger to itch with beacuse you could tear
your skin, end up with an infection!) >
Good luck and stay positive!

Please Reply to: Nancy Neuman montananeum@xxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ==========================================

Just got word today from my orthopedic physician that I will be laid up in a
full leg cast for 4-6 weeks due to a kick that fractured my tibia...anybody
out there had a similiar fracture and would care to give me some feedback on
healing time and how one who rides 3-5 times a week is supposed to stay
sedentary with their leg elevated. All I can think of is getting back into
the saddle and into the woods. I live in northwest Montana and our riding
time is limited due to the weather up here. If I'm lucky, I'll still have
some of September and October and maybe even November to ride yet this
year...I'm trying to stay positive, but HELP!!! Thanks for your input,
Nancy...
