[RC] RC] Pet peeve! - Chris Paus

Annoying, isn't it? I have 8 horses here. I sure hope it doesn't spread through the whole herd! the sick one is pastured with two other horses. they have shared a water tank and feed buckets before I realized how sick he was, so I suppose it's inevitable that they will come down with it. That's why i skipped the ride this weekend, even though I left the sick one at home. I don't know if the others could be spreading the virus already even though they dont' show symptoms yet. sigh..... Of course, the three that are pastured together are all my riding horses.... gaaaaaa...

The mares and foals are in a separate pasture and stallion is in a third area, so I'm hoping they are far enough away not to get it. I'm being careful to wash hands, change shirts, etc, after handling the sickie.

Poor guy. I thought he had gotten some kind of tarry stuff on his legs. We do have a defunct oil well on our property that leaks tar now and then. But it was dried snot! Poor guy is wiping his nose on his legs. My grandson is so worried about his horse, that he pitched a tent and slept outside last night with Zab.

I'm sure we picked it up at county fair... grrrrrrr. John told me a horse three stalls down from us had a cough. I hadn't noticed it, but John usually is pretty accurate in his observations. That same poor horse had a nasty cut up chest from running through barbed wire before fair. Now what parents and kids would take an injured and sick horse to the fair? The cuts were superficial, but looked pretty nasty and I'm sure were uncomfortable for the poor horse. they showed her in just about every event and games too, sigh......what's wrong with people? And why didn't the horse project leaders tell them to take that horse back home?

Another reason why I prefer endurance over showing!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Chris,

That happened at Wild West this year. Someone brought a contagious horse because our horse came home and had the exact symptoms, then passed it on to another, who just quit coughing about 2 weeks ago. Fortunately my two young ones who have no contact with these two, did not get it. I know about 5 others personally who had the same virus after that ride. If it is the same virus, it takes about a month before they quit coughing!
