RE: [RC] Women's Group - Steph Teeter

Hey Tom - all of this really is based upon your personal values, what you
consider 'effective' (to what end) and whether being effective is even a
'good' thing. In some circles (e.g. International Relations) Ed's diplomacy
would be considered very effective, and probably a good thing. Perhaps if
one is engaged in illegal activity, being effective would be a bad (morally)
thing. Behind every fluff bunny is probably a very intelligent human, who
has become quite effective at finding ways to pass the time at a boring job.
It's supposed to be 107 degrees here today, I have to go ride - build up
that heat tolerance, push those heart rates up a little, trying to be in our
best form for Arabian Nights. I think there is almost as much art as there
is science in Endurance - when the rubber meets the road, its still about
pacing and dealing with the myriad issues that define a 100 mile
competition, and the more technical the course, the truer this is. An
optimally fit, genetically superior horse is the best place to start, with
an optimally fit rider, but 100 miles is still a very very long way...

Steph

(please don't deride me for babbling on with generalities, I'm effectively
procrastinating... it's hot out there)

"..women that can help other women over issues unique to us in
riding, particularly endurance..."

Since about 80% of endurance riders are women, I submit for consideration if
any "minority" group needs a special list it is the men.

Ed

PS. Don't take this post too seriously, just as many men would be
embarassed to talk of things related to male equipment I am aware that there
are many women who have issues that they don't want to post about where men
are likely to read.>

No offense taken, Ed, of course. How could you possibly give offense when
each of your posts covers all the bases and presents no point of view?

However, in defense of logic and accountability, I would have to suggest a
more realistic breakdown of the majority/minority situation in endurance.
For instance, without doing actual blood sampling, the empirical evidence
suggests something more like 80% women, 1% men, and 19% drones in the sport.
As always, I consider myself to be in the 1% elite category. Otherwise, why
bother with statistics, eh?

Since women know women far better than men know, or want to know, women, let
me suggest that a woman attack that 80% number and break it into parts as
well. One categoy might be, "effective human being". That is, an entity that
gets the job done. That would be an elite group, of course.

At the opposite end of the spectrum might be "weepers and wailers"--or a
more scientific name. Of course, that would include most of the drones
mentioned above.

And we need a scientific name for plain fluff bunnies. Those who cannot
possibly get the job done because they can't figure out what the job
IS--again, have to include most of the drones in this category. And Druids
and alpha cows. Have to have a category for them--but it's still not
necessarily gender specific--witness Joe and Bob.

And there's the rub, really. Anatomy doesn't seem to be a genuine qualifier
in the categories I have in mind. You have a kind of bell curve between
effective and ineffective. The true minority here is the "effective". Those
are the ones that need to form a club.

Steph, for example, is an effective. But so is John. and there are a bunch
of effectives that never post on RC--so we need a "reach out" kind of
movement to attract that downtrodden minority. See my upcoming "100" posts
and you'll know what they're doing instead of reading and posting here.
