[RC] How do you pick the horse? - Donna Coss

The Shagya Arabian is worth your consideration if one is searching for an ideal endurance mount. 200 years ago the Hungarian Cavalry made a bue print for the perfect horse to use in military conditions. This was the beginning of the Shagya breed and for 200 years the breeding stock has undergone a keuring process. All breeding stock is inspected! Almost all of the traits an endurance rider feels are important, one will find in either a purebred or partbred Shagya.

You ask for good feet! You could not ask for better feet then you will find in the Shagya breed. They are big, round, dense and normally do not need shoes unless in extreme rocky conditions. They are very easy keepers! Temperament is very people orientated--they want to be with you!

The breed normally is larger then the purebred Arabian, very large heart girth, strong backs and loins and if the breeder has watched their breeding stock, the legs are straight with short cannons. Recently we had two five year olds X-Rayed with hocks, everything that could be X-rayed was! Result on both, Vets said they were some of the cleanest x-rays they had seen forever!

The breed is rare and if you find a good one, the price will vary, depending on the farm and how much they have invested in the breed. Importing new bloodlines from Europe is expensive, but necessary if one is serious about developing and maintaining breed characteristics that the 200 year old selection process has honed and refined into some of the best horse flesh available today.
