Re: [RC] How do you pick the horse? - steelsidedown

I have just finished a "horse search" and had a similar decisions to make.

The first, was a farm that "recycled" horses orginally bred for another sport. A group of about 15, similar ages, similar breeding. I walked out in the field and found one horse with straight legs and normal "feet". (unfortunately he was overpriced and the search continued)

The second, a farm going from showing to breeding, had two geldings, same age, same sire, both straight legs, normal feet, good back. On first impression one was clearly more personable, curious, and expressive. Then we got them moving in the field. The other was an amazing mover, I was blown away. Either horse would have suited, but its a question of which PERSONALITY I would prefer.

The third farm, simply dispersing extra horses. Had five, different ages, different sexes, same parents, all quite similiar in body type. I listened to the owner tell me about each one, then told her what I was looking for. She immediately pointed out which one she thought would suit me. I carefully inspected the group, evaluted personalities, size, and eliminated one horse due to a skin issue. The one that looked the "best" to me, also had a personality pleasing to me, and was the horse THE OWNER TOLD ME, WOULD SUIT ME!

The moral? An honest seller is gold, and involved horse "moms" or "dads" knows thier "children"!
Just listen!

Let's suppose there are a number of 3 year old horses with similar back
grounds and breeding available.
How would you select the one or two to put two years of feed, training, and
conditioning into with the idea of having a good 50 mile horse at 5 years
old.

None are yet under saddle.

What conformation qualities would you insist on?
What else would be important to you?
