Regarding the carbs after the workout/event. I'll confess
my ignorance up front. I've just started and am only
doing LDs with my pony. She currently has access to all
the hay she wants. I also take her on 30 minute "grass
walks" at least 5 out of 7 days. She gets a half scoop
of oats in the morning and another at night.

During a ride she'll have wet beet pulp mixed with
her oats as I want to make sure she's hydrated.
She gets wet beet pulp at the hold and along the
ride she gets to eat as much grass as she can
as long as we maintain a 5 to 6 mph pace. We
aren't setting any land speed records nor do I
intend to anytime soon. Immediately after completion
she's again offered wet beet pulp and oats.

The beet pulp comes out to maybe a large coffee
can and a half total.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, the oats
are indeed carbs? I've not had any problems
with her post ride and she has managed all A's
with one B for gut sounds during a very hot, not
much water, ride in March.

By the way I did order Tom's book, the fit racehorse
and can't wait to read it. If I have questions
Tom could I email you with them?
