Re: [RC] To Ed - Sisu West Ranch

Mr. Ivers:

There are a very few people whose word I will take with no justification. The funny thing is that most of them habitually give adequate justification without the necessity of prompting. Even when I have a relationship with a person that indicates I should trust their judgement, if their statement is contrary to my own experience or to common practice I usually ask for a reasonable amount of explanation and supporting data.

There are a number of approaches to talking about ideas and teaching new concepts. If one is in a "debate" one cites everything supporting his/her case and does not point out any warnings about the limitations of the data. If one is in a friendly discussion one should mention the limitations of the research he/she is citing, and may in fact point out opposing research. This type of discussion does not have clear winners or losers but often gets closer to the truth. Internally, in the industrial laboratories where I was employed, this sort of give and take was the norm.

I am not asking for complete reviews of every study you use, but a couple of sentences summarizing the limitations, and method would be appreciated. An informal footnote, with the journal or publication can also help. I know that most people on this list do not want to read the primary literature. The one time I posted on an important topic where I had done a fairly complete literature search, I offered to send a bibliography to anyone requesting it and to copy and mail the papers for a nominal copying fee.

I will confess to being lax on reading literature about equine performance training and thus have never purchased any of your books. Amazon lists 6 books you have written. "The fit racehorse II" appears to be the only one in print. Which of your publications would you recommend to me as an endurance rider, and do they have extensive footnotes and bibliographies? It would be my intention to spend some time this winter in the University of Montana library reading the primary literature upon which you base your recommendations.
