This all relates to the statement, often heard, that science changes and
what is supposedly true this year may be disproved next year etc. -- Ed Hauser
I have been reading this thread begun with Mr Tivers scientific analyses of
endurance riders' competancies with morbid fascination. He reminds me of the
Ivory Tower MDs lecturing the peons slogging out in the workplace on the newest
and best health care treatments. After 20 years, my wide eyed admiration has
pared down to scrunched eyed cynicism - I have learned that today's great study
is next years "sadly, flawed presentation - one we're not following any more"
The best clue to whether or not one should test out the research on the poor
patients is the degree of arrogance in the presenter.
But to follow the discussion on the carbo-charge - some writers are saying this
has helped with post ride weight loss. Wouldnt the same parameters that apply
to us humans - follow with horses? To avoid hypoglycemia, it is important to
temper the carbs with protein which evens out the blood sugar, thus avoiding
the highs and lows that come with carb loads? I would think this is where the
alfalfa would come in handy as suggested by some the vets who write in - who by
the way I have really appreciated. Give me a study and I'll find another one
which has the opposite finding - any good student will tell you how easy it is
to play with statitics - but give me input from someone who is out there
treating and dealing with horses on a daily basis - and I am all eyes.
Anecdotal stories are disparaged in medicine until someone pays attention and
THEN - does the study !!! Suddenly the info becomes worth reading.
