Monte used the clear 100% silicone on Candy instead of interference boots (and used the same under hoof pads as packing). Yes, it does have a strong vinegar oder, so it might irritate some horses. BUT, he didn't really get it into the skin. What he did, especially if there was already a bare spot, was ring the silicone around it and let it cure a bit, then rub some carefully over the top so it mostly "capped" the ring. It always caused comments from the vets, that's probably why NIna used the white.

That said, Karen, I do remember Nina Warren saying she put bathroom
calking under splint boots to prevent rubs. I'm betting she used latex. I
know it was white because she said everyone just thought it was desitin.
