[RC] food choices during holds - Jonni

50 in October. During the vet hold, K would not eat his usual hay & wet beet
pulp <<<

First, it seems horses (and kids) always like what some one else brought for
lunch, more than what they have. Put two horses next to each other, with
their mashes, and more often than not, it seems they swap "plates". Next,
I'd guess that on your first 50, you may find the horse will eat better than
it did on the 25. Especially after he figures out you are not almost "done".

I offer up a selection with the fussy ones. My mash of choice these days, is
Strategy and Beet Pulp. The carrots can be mixed in. Some days the horse
picks the carrots out first, and other days they pick around the carrots,
and will only eat them if hand fed. Hay is usually what seems to be rejected
the most, but I found Hank decided that if soaked in a bucket of water
during Tevis, he would eat more of it.

Also, give some of these mashes at home, so you know how eager they are to
eat them on a normal basis. My horse is a vacuum. He will bury his head in
the mash, and not come up until done. So if he gets fussy, or picks at it
during a ride, then I know he is "not right".
