[RC] 100 milers - sandy . l . holder

Well folks, several of my friends and I have been working over the past 4
years to get to this point, doing our first 100 miler (me on my own horse),
and yes, its the Tevis. With great mentors along the way (Lanie - my
original buddy, and now Dick and Barbara and Julie - it took awhile for the
'awe effect' to wear off of course!), we're here.

A few things happened along the way including that Barbara won't be riding
our mare Sister (at 100 lbs. heavy and the 102 heat at Auburn last Thurs.
she just didn't quite make the grade but Barbara was smart to line up
another horse and will be riding with her mom), and with all the beautiful
atheletic horses here and knowing that only about 50 % will complete, its a
daunting endeavor. I think there are more of us up and comers out there
than you think wanting to do 100's though. I mean, I'm one of those that
just got back into riding at 39 (plus or minus, you know what I mean). By
the way, everyone keeps telling me that its going to be a fun ride but be
sure to buy the helicopter insurance!

Not to be discouraged, I decided to look at the statistics. Did I mention
that only 13 % of first timers actually complete the Tevis successfully.

So wish us luck and don't believe everything you hear about no one wanting
to do 100's. Me, I kept COMPLETELY QUITE about this goal of mine until I
HAD to. That means when I had to start soliciting crew members. By the
way, my mom and daughter are here with me. My mom wants to be there should
I live or die and my daughter says she wants my horse if I do. They even
bought me a t-shirt to wear - it says, CRAZY DOESN'T EVEN BEGIN TO COVER
IT!

So if I don't finish I'll have at least made my first attempt. . . And then
there will be the NEXT one (well provided the helicopter shows up)!!!

Take care,
Sandy, Tally and the gang!
