Re: [RC] beet pulp - Laney Humphrey

I'm not going to be very much help because I'm not much of a measurer. At home I use a scant 1/2 big coffee can per horse as a vehicle for supplements. If I get it too wet & they have to slurp it, the brown all over their noses acts as a sunblock (joking!) At rides, when I'm trying to get as many calories in as possible, I give each a full can plus a scoop of Purina Eq. Sr. plus supplements & lots of carrots all slopped up twice a day. And they have hay in front of them at all times. I would probably give the "resting at the trailer today" horse slightly less but that would really depend on the horse. Some horses, as we all know, get fat on air and others needs lots more. I actually have one who will eat 24/7 but never gets fat. He sure does poop a lot tho'!
If I haven't been feeding beet pulp for a while, I start with no more than a 1/2 can and work up to allow the horses to adjust to it again. If I think there is a higher than usual amount of molasses in the beet pulp (& it can vary from bag to bag even from the same producer), I'll soak it then discard the soaking water and add fresh water.

How much beet pulp do you competitive endurance riders feed at a time? and 1 or 2 X daily? When you figure how many # of beet pulp, is that before or after soaking in water? Thanks, Lisa
