Garlinghouse, D.V.M. When you have the teeth checked, ask (and pay for) a complete dental exam--- not just poking a finger into the sides of the mouth to check the first few cheek teeth. My horses had regular veterinarian dental check-ups and tune-ups. Because of what I had read on this list, when an opportunity came up to have an equine dentist (and veterinarian) look at them, I took it and was amazed by what we found. Dr. Metcalf not only allowed us to look over her shoulder, she encouraged it. With the horse sedated and the mouth held open with the speculum, it was easy to see the problems that our vet couldn't see trying to hold the tongue to the side in the pasture. Dr. Metcalf explained how the teeth should look and function and gave us treatment options. Both horses had obvious problems that must have caused pain. A number of behavior problems disappeared that I believe were caused by mouth pain. Made me feel good too -- that it was a good decision to have a thorough examine and treatment.
