The physical side of this got pretty well covered -- but if I had a mare that 
seemed to have behaviour issues with heat cycle, I'd want to try regumate, or 
some other sort of hormone regulator before spaying, and I'd want to explore 
this for myself also, is there something temporary that can regulate or reduce 
hormones to see is it helpful, before doing a surgical procedure, or have tests 
shown high hormones -- I can get awful moods that I cant control that correlate 
to my cycle, but its not bad every month and its usually 1 day only, so I can 
live with it at this time. 

--I've also found that the Essential Oils seem to help me (I use orange and 
lemon --brightening, and basil and lavender soothing.) I put a few drops on a 
cotten pad and put on my humidfier at night (I also use some that are just for 
congestion) and that works better than the stuff they sell for dispersing them 
, or I'll mix a bit of the EO's with a carrier oil and rub on my hands so I 
also get skin care.
