Re: [RC] mare for hire/having a colt for a friend - Bette Lamore

Hi Cindy
I have contracts I use for lease of my mares to breed to my stallion which are
very specific about the need for the lessor to take out full medical and
mortality on my mare (only around $400 total for both coverages through Accord)
and you have to be sure to ask for proof and for you to be named benefactor. I
made the mistake of trusting the lessor once (who happened to be a second year
vet school student-- so you can never tell) and lost my best mare (dam of
Riverdance) when she was not well taken care of and colicked and the lessor had
her put down because she could not afford the cost of surgery. I did not find
out about this until after the fact. A very hard lesson for me (and the lessor,
as several of us who had bad dealings with her had her thrown out of vet school
so that she could not abuse any other horses!)
No matter how good the lessor walks the walk, talks the talk, you have to
protect your horse and even then, bad things happen, (even when leased to a
friend), so it is best to get EVERYTHING in writing and spelled out.
I have a contract I use and can attach it separately to you if you would like.
There is room for customization.
Please be careful as leasing mares is very risky. That is why mine stay at my
place where I know the care they are receiving (unless the person is a close
friend and even then the insurance policy is in force) and I will never allow
any to be shipped out of state again.
Good luck
Bette
