[RC] OD harder than Tevis? - Michael Maul

In response to: "Is OD harder than Tevis?"

In 1998 - I was crewing for a horse I had conditioned for Tevis that the owner leased to a foreign competitor.

I was waiting at FH for them to come in and to pass the time - I started chatting with this older guy next to me who was also waiting. I speculated about which was harder - OD or Tevis - not really expecting an answer.

The older guy said he felt it depended on whether the humidity was very high at OD or whether the temperature at Tevis was very high. He felt either could be the more difficult depending on the conditions of the day.

I sort of blew him off thinking - what did he know? I later saw all sorts of important people paying attention to this older guy and decided to check out who he was.

He turned out to be Mathew Mackay-Smith - the winner of both OD and Tevis in the same year(1994 or so) on the same horse.

I'm impressed by the wins as well as someone who doesn't say - I won both of them and here's my view.

Mike
