RE: [RC] [RC] horse ads responses....how does one know what is legit?? - Mark White

Here is a classic example of the scam emails, received by my sister in N.H.
a couple of days ago right after she posted an ad for a horse for sale.
These aren't written by the brightest bulbs:

"Hello,
I am interest in your horse and mode of payment will be by certified
check ,so give me the price and the picture of the car. Get back to me as
soon as possible."

I reply to all responses to my ads with a standard e-mail
that states if the
buyer decides to purchase my horse, trailer, whatever, that
my bank requires
that a copy of all cashiers checks or money orders be faxed
to them ahead of
time so that the check can be verified. Further, I do not
intend to forward
any funds from any check anywhere until the funds are
actually sitting in
the brand new account that I have opened for the sole purpose
of depositing
this check. If these requirements meet with the buyer's
approval, please
e-mail me back.

Out of the many initial responses I have gotten, I have
gotten ONE reply
after sending my little statement of my requirements. That
person did,
indeed, fax me the copy of the cashiers check and waited for
my bank to
verify it before they came and picked up the trailer.
Legitimate buyers
won't mind letting you do this.
