Re: [RC] Trotting TWH's(?) - agilbxr

I don't know much about trotting walkers, but my Paso trots.  And paces, and does a half corto/half canter thing that is actually pretty nice to ride. I tell everyone I have the worlds only 8 gaited Paso.

He will walk, trot, canter, corto, largo, pace, the half/half thing, and spook.  (if the spook is the arab's 4th gait, it's the paso's 8th).  He will do them all but the half/half and pace on command.  He trots when he gets tired, and he really likes to canter, that will drop his heartrate by about 15 bpm.  When I first got him, he didn't know anything but forward (as fast as possible), and stop.  I spent 2 years doing dressage and mainly trotting in order to teach him to use his body and balance.  I believe that more than anything is what improved his corto and largo.  Now, depending on how I ask him to hold his head, and what bit is in his mouth, is how he goes.

As a side note, I had more fun at a little local horse show one day.  I entered the open obedience class just to mess with all the western pleasure riders, and we were doing really well.  Of course, Alpine did everything about 5 times faster than all the peanut rollers in the class, but he did them, and very well.  The judge--who was a western pleasure type judge--thought she'd get rid of us by asking for a posting trot.  I dropped Al's head, he started trotting, and I started posting.  She sat there and stared at us for about 2 minutes.  It was pretty funny!  In the end, however, we got pulled.  She asked for a counter canter just as I was on a corner, and I couldn't get him un-bent enough at that time to pick up the correct lead.  Oh well! We had a lot of fun....

Like another poster, I know trot! The TW I watched being worked in the round pen several weeks ago was trotting! And a gorgeous trot it was too, absolutely balanced. I've watched a pacey gaited Morgan and a Foxtrotter trot too. I wouldn't have wanted to be on their backs when they "trotted." They were trotting but it wasn't natural for them and it wasn't even and balanced.

My friends, maybe I am wrong, butI am skeptical. The hundreds of field trial Walkers we see come from all over the deep south and the rest of the nation. The stepping pace is the desired gait for all Big Lick (ugh)TWH's,and that group is by far the dominant genetic TWH strain, whether we approve or not.I see little or no mention of the fox-trot in these posts, but if a horse can do both a square trot and a RW,he HAS to occasionally do a fox-trot.I still think most of these TWH's said to be trotting are doing nearly the opposite;a gait one click to the center from a square pace,in the direction of the stepping pace. > > > =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
