[RC] gaitin' versus age - Paul Latiolais

I have not quite been following all the comments (Too much riding, I guess), but I have a slightly different comment.

Gait Versus Age. There are a few paso's that don't gait; Sad but true. AND the are a few paso's that do nothing but gait from day one.

In my experience (I have owned eight of them over the years), most paso's have the gait in there somewhere and it just takes time, practice and maturity (balance?) to get them to gait consistently. Part of it is rating. They will gait at a particular speed, but like all young horses, they can't keep one speed consistently.

Also, there is the issue of growth. From my experience, Paso Fino's don't fully mature until they are seven. As such they are likely to have balance issues until then. Consequently, the gait can be a problem until then. Of the gaited horses I have owned, only one of them has had that spot-on gait from day one; Collected, Uncollected. It did not matter. He is even in one of David Lichman's videos, because he gaited so well as a four year old completlyl uncollected.

Now my mare, who just turned nine, has always had a nice corto, but it took awhile for it to be consistent. She did not get a lot of exercise until I started campaigning her in endurance last summer. He largo did not get set until after the first endurance ride THIS year. Now the largo is also a nice smooth gait for her.

Comments? Corrections?
