Re: [RC] hobbles - Mary Sutliff

We pack our horses in Washington's Cascade mountains and I know for a
fact that horses can really learn to move out in hobbles. We have
friends who lost their horses for two weeks because they were hobbled
overnight. They had to hike out, hire an airplane to search for the
horses and when they were found they were several drainages away.
They'd covered many rough mlles and were still hobbled. We highline our
horses at night and keep a sharp eye out any time they are grazing &
hobbled. Highlines can be set up between trees or between two trailers
and work very will. A horse staked out is safer if the hobble is on the
foot rather than havinig a rope tied to a halter. This takes training
and doesn't work for all horses.
