[RC] re: green grass founder, - Mary Bradford

I lived in Kansas for 30 years and had horses for 18 of those.  Our horses were on grass pastures that grew clear to their bellies the entire time.  We never had a founder case.  A neighbor bought a nice Arabian mare and turned her out in the winter. As soon as the grass came up she promptly foundered and would relapse on grass every year.  She found a new home in a dry lot with a nice teenage girl.  I don't know what makes one founder and one not.  I think there is a predispotion to it.  Our horses are in a pasture that you might as well say has no grass.  We go hunting or riding and they eat as much green grass as they want and we never have a problem with them.  Our friend has to bring pack horse pellets for his and tie it away from all greenery because he will colic every time if you don't.

Very strange.
Mary
