[RC] Secrets to Hydration??? help...... - Jonni

What I realized I was NOT doing, was pre-load hydrating myself the days
before a ride. We all worry so much about out horses doing so, yet I think
many of us do not drink enough before the rides ourselves to go into it well
hydrated. So, I start really making sure I am drinking lots of water the
days before. I also found, that even though many can't taste a difference in
types of water, for me, I found I can drink Aqua Fina bottles water easier
than other bottles water, or tap water. It goes down better if room
temperature, or just slightly cooler. If really cold, I can not drink it as
well. I fill my water bottles on my saddle with Aqua Fina, and will drink
about one bottle per hour on the trail.I carry 4 water bottles. I usually
am good at eating snacks, and will often eat salted nuts or such. At vet
checks, or lunch, I will try to drink some 1/2 and 1/2 Gatorade/water and I
often crave some sort of salty food, like chips, crackers etc. On the trail
I carry with me, some Emergent C powder (Wal-Marts have it now) and some
Succeed electrolyte tablets. (link below...used by ultra runners) Also some
GU, or Powerbar gel. I can usually feel if I need to replace electrolytes,
and not just drink straight water before I get funky. So I just pay
attention to how I am feeling.

I was getting horrible headaches with the humid TX heat. Lived in CA most of
my life, and always had relatively dry heat. So even No. TX, which has a
much more mild humidity level was tough on me. Took me until last year to
figure out my sinuses were part of the issue. If I take an Actifed before I
ride, my headaches often don't happen. BUT, because they are dehydrating, I
need to drink even more. I don't recommend this, just offering what I found
that worked for the heat headaches I was getting.

The bottom line is drink water, and start the ride well hydrated. Just like
how you want your horse, eh?

Here is the link to the company that sells stuff to the ultra runners. Real
nice small business, that has been very helpful.
