I'm really enjoying this discussion.  I use a HR everytime on every horse.  Of course I don't compare between the horses but with THAT horse at THAT speed on THAT trail.  All very interesting.
 
Question:  How do YOU know when the muscles/soft tissues are conditioned?  I want to complete a 75 that has a lot of sand on it.  I don't have access to sand.  What can I do to adequately prepare for this ride?
 
ASSUMPTIONS:  said horse already has a good base and is currently healthy
