[RC] Part-Breds and its connection to the Shagya Arabian - Donna Coss

Before someone takes off on the words, PARTBREDS, let me hasten to inform that the SHAGYA ARABIAN, A 200 YEAR OLD BREED AND not a sub-species or strain of Arabian, as is commonly thought, was referred to as "Part Breds" even though they were bred pure! This continued until after WWII. Some of the horses brought over for the remount were termed "part-bred" even though they were actually Shagya Arabians.

The Austrio-Hungarian empire began breeding the Shagya Arabians in 1836 because of the demand for high quality cavalry horses. They compiled a bueprint for the perfect riding type horse! And their plan was surely successful because before WWII, 3000 Shagya Arabians were being produced and recognized as the elites of the horse world.

The plan began with five desert bred Arabian stallions, including one named "SHAGYA". Through meticulous culling and careful breeding back only to approved Arabians, over time, the Shagya developed very specific breed characteristics with incredibly strong genetic power. The stud book has remained intact for 200 years and breeding records indeed go back that far.

The World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) recogizes the Shagya as a distinct breed. After WWII it took many years to recover . Known mostly as Part Breds or "Araber Rasse", the breed finally began to receive recognition as a genetic goldmine by European warmblood breeders in the 1960's. In 1983 the ISG (Araber Gesellschaft International) was formed and selected the name "Shagya Arabian"! The organization oversees the world-wide breeding of the Shagya horse.

Originally bred and used as a tough cavalry horse its introduction into the endurance world is a natural. The breed numbers are still very small, but those who have contact with the breed quickly become admirers. The purebred Arabian is used as an outcross about every four generations with no more then 7 out of the 16 ancestors in the fourth generation allowed to be PB Arabian!

Because endurance was one of the traits selected for, as well as larger bone, more substance, calm, sane mind etc., the Shagya is being slowly discovered by the endurance world. Hopefully that trend will continue!
