[RC] conditioning for first ride-RAIN and MUD! - martina keil

Hello there....I started conditioning two horses seriously about one montha go. I am hoping to complete a 30 mile ride June 25 in Sunriver, Oregon. Mostly been walking and trotting 5-8 miles 3-4 times per week. What I have been running into is more spring rain (continuous) than this country (eastern Oregon)  has seen since the 60's! I went out last night and the dirt roads and trails are so muddy it seemed downright stupid to even try and trot. IT IS SATURATED. I am so afraid that June 25th will roll around and my horses won't be able to do it. Where do I go from here. Will long fast paced walks till then allow me to finish a 30 mile ride.I hate to trot on asphalt, but at this point if some serious trots are in order that is my only option.  The arena is even a muddy mess. I really don't care if I am dead last, this will be a first and I am doing it more for the experience (both the horses, myself and my husband) than anything.
PS...no rain rain go away songs...I know we need the moisture. Trying not to complain about it. Martina
