RE: [RC] guest rider etiquette - Chris Paus

Yeah, what Ranelle said!

Usually when someone has ridden one of my horses, I've hauled it over to the ride site. I ask the rider to pay his or her own entry fee. If I have to take the horse out of state, the rider pays the health cert. I do expect the rider to take good care of the horse in camp and out on trail and help me clean up and pack up after the ride.

I let the rider keep whatever awards are earned.

I have been on both sides of the fence on this issue Andrea. Hopefully I can
be of some help. When I was asked to train Bogus Thunder, Hal Hall's horse
for the summer of his first year of endurance, I conditioned the horse,
trained the horse, cleaned up his pen daily, drove to the barn to give him
his vitamins, stood for the farrier, etc. Hall and Ann paid all the expenses
including the ride entry.

When I joined them on a ride just to ride, because I did not have a horse
that was sound to compete, I paid my own expenses. It depends on your level
of commitment prior to the event. It sounds like you are a "passenger", yes?
If that is the case, please offer to pay the entry fee and share gas. Please
bring your own food (or offer to contribute to a joint effort). Even if they
decline your offer, you will be invited back. Before the ride, offer to be
there to pack the rig, bathe the horses, etc. During the ride, care for your
horse as if it were yours. After the ride, again 'as if it were yours". Ask
the owner what speed, and give them permission to "coach" you where needed.

We took a lady with us to a beautiful coastal weekend (a pleasure weekend of
camping) who will not be invited back. She not only did not care about the
horse (did not clean him up after the ride, nor did she clean up after him),
but she left the morning of the second day so we had to pony the horse we
had brought for her so we could ride. She knew this going in and didn't
care.

And above all else, have fun!!

Subject: [RC] guest rider etiquette

I have been given the opportunity to be a guest rider at an upcoming
ride. I am new to the sport of endurance but not to horses and
horseback riding. I have completed one 25 mile LD on my own horse but
am a serious novice with regard to most things endurance. (I am
learning a lot on the list though but have only recently subscribed!)

So, please, can you all share with me what is expected of a "guest
rider"? I don't want to offend and very much want to be asked back! Do
I offer to pay for fuel, ride entry, feed for horse, etc??? What tasks
can I perform that are appreciated pre-ride, during ride, post-ride?

Thanks so much!!
