[RC] Yearling mouthiness - Rosalie Marley

I have an ungelded yearling colt (was 12 months old in mid-april). He has
been handled lots since birth and was pretty civilized until he hit 11
months and became really mouthy - just grabbing everything.

While grooming him last night, I tried a non-jointed bit with a copper
roller - just hanging it his mouth with a nylon headstall (not touching
teeth). He was tied by his halter. He kept himself busy playing with the
bit instead of mouthing/biting everything else. I'm wondering if this is a
bad thing to do, and what else can I do to get him to keep his mouth to
himself?
