Re: [RC] Tire Pressure and Weight - Laney Humphrey

Good point about the tire rating. "E" is the lowest I'd go and I know folks who go much higher, but then they are pulling lots of weight!

I don't know what kind of truck you have. Did you say? Also, it's impossible
to tell without knowing the weight of the trailer. However, on my truck I use
70 psi in the rear when towing and 40 when not. That's from the manufacturer's
specs and the tire size and rating. When there is weight on the back end of the
truck you need *more* pressure in the tires, not less.

The tires I have on my truck are "E" rated. "D" rated tires (one step lower) won't hold
up to towing and the torque the truck places on them. They cost over $180 each when
installed, and that was during the yearly "sale"... 10% off... that's about as big a
discount as I've found on them. They also last 60 - 70K miles. I can't imagine
paying $120 / tire for proper towing tires.

I didn't trust anyone to tell me what tires I needed. It's my truck. I figured I'd better
know. However, if you find out that the tires they sold you aren't up to the job even
though they said they were, you can probably trade them back in to get a proper set
of tires. I also replaced my shocks since the ones I had were worn (which will wear out
tires faster). All told 4 proper tires and proper shocks installed was $1000 "on sale".

BTW, $180 / tire is why I didn't buy a dually.
