[RC] Purina?? - Patti Kuvik

I have a spreadsheet you can plug in the numbers from feed tags (or
websites) to compare feeds - protein, fat, minerals, etc. You can also plug
in your local cost and figure cost per lb/oz/serving/day. If anyone would
like a copy to play with, email me at
plwoodbury <at> msn <dot>com.
One disadvantage to using heavily mineral fortified feeds is when you vary
the amount fed (to increase/decrease energy or condition) you are also
varying the minerals and vitamins, which should have a relatively constant
baseline. Ultium, for example, has 65ppm copper - each pound supplies
29.5mg. So if you're only feeding 2lbs, you may be under-supplementing; if
you're feeding 6 lbs, you could be over-supplementing. While it might be
more work, there's some advantage to keeping "energy/fat" feeds separate
from vitamin/mineral supplements - a good reason to consider using
"straights" as Dot mentions, or low mineral feeds (such as Empower) or
non-fortified feeds (such as MoorGlo) for fats, or just sticking with
flax/rice bran/corn oil.

About the only way to find out sugar/starch (NSC) in a feed is to get it
tested yourself. A few (Triple Crown, LMF) will tell you if you contact
them, most won't give you a specific answer.

As far as the nutrient content of COB - you can check the "averages" for
grains in the DairyOne
Feed Composition Library
http://www.dairyone.com/Forage/FeedComp/disclaimer.asp.
If you plug the numbers into the spreadsheet, you could then figure the
totals for protein, fiber, minerals, etc. and can compare your grain mix to
commercial feeds.

Whatever happened to Purina 100, 200, 300? (For idle,
growing/breeding, or working horses?) That used to work well for each.
And was tasty, too. And does regular Omelene have too much sugar for
some horses?

Just curious. Presently using plain 3 way, COB to some of you. Seems to
work fine mixed with beet pulp when wanted.
