[RC] Grass Clippings--USE beet pulp! - Donna Coss

Concerning grass clippings --if out of hay! USE beet pulp! Most of it is manufactured in Colorado, so its not expensive. One bag will get you through until pasture time. We use beet pulp with wheat bran to balance the Ca/phos levels most of the year.

Use about 16 oz. pulp to 6 oz. bran, add several quarts of water and let soak either overnight or 3-4 hours. You can add grain mix to this or any of your supplements, oil etc. Horses usually love beet pulp and there is normally not a problem, if fed properly.

In the summer, you have to be careful the wet mix doesn't ferment--not a problem in the winter months. We also add the dry beet pulp to our custom grain mix, which we store in 2 ton overhead bin.

If getting hay is a problem or is too expensive, beet pulp is your best alternative.
