I had a very similar experience and did get whacked in the head quite 
hard by a mare I was interested in buying.  I was concerned but 
despite this "issue" I decided I really liked the mare and bought her 
anyway.  (My husband thought I was crazy).
I bought a sidepull and the problem immediately went away.  It's just 
amazing.  Sometimes these horses can look and act so out of control 
but a simple change in equipment can make a world of difference.

This "wild" mare is probably the most reliable, trustworthy horse 
I'll ever have the pleasure of owning... worth her weight in gold.
