Re: [RC] Cash Cloned (registration) - heidi

Any registry sets up criteria and requirements for registering a horse
with that registry. To register a horse you have to meet these
requirements no matter how artifical or real they are. In the case of
the Cash clone, there is no doubt he is a purebred Arabian - but under
the AHA he cannot be registered as such with them. Tells me that the AHA
is an organization set up to protect the status quo of the Arabian
breeders - having nothing to do with maintaining the Arabian bloodlines.

On the contrary, the AHA has bent over backward to ensure that purebred
Arabians can be registered as such. They allow ET, frozen semen, chilled
semen, etc. Prior to the merger, they really didn't give a hang about the
status quo of Arabian breeders, and the Registry entity still doesn't, in
the sense that you mean--they work just as hard to accomplish hardship
registrations for purebreds fallen on hard times as they do to register
the foals of Mr. Bigbucks Glossyad Breeder. I don't suspect the subject
of clones has ever come up. That said, even if they don't allow
registration of clones, I don't think one can read into that the
"protection of the status quo." Far from it.

I suspect it doesn't really matter, if he produces good endurance horses
he will probably bring as much in stud fees as if he were registered -
that is if Ms Kanavey allows any mares except her own to be bred to him.

I suspect it may mean more to many than Valerie realizes--although there
will likely be some who are willing. Additionally, given that there have
been many Arabians of similar breeding to Cash and darn few that have done
well in the sport, the odds of him being a consistent producer of good
endurance horses is relatively low, IMO. Outcrosses do not in general
reproduce themselves--as Nicole pointed out, the reason that the handful
of them that have are famous is because the odds are so against it
happening.

But then there are those that get a thrill out of dropping big bucks at
the tables in Vegas, too--this is just one more example of just such a
gamble against the odds.
