[RC] vaccinations - Marlene Moss

Well, here is my news to add to the conversation!  Last week Lisa Douglass asked about homeopathics and mentioned that both her horse and a friend’s had reactions to Rhino/flu.  That was me and one of my 6 horses.  Two years ago she had her shots in the neck and the next day couldn’t lower her neck to eat and had to eat out of a hay bag for a couple days.  Last year she got it in the rump and the next day trembled all over her body and was reluctant to move, but she could and ate fine.

So this year I was going to wait and do Rhino/flu separately again, but try the intranasal.  Well, I had the biggest brain fart of my life and as the vet and I chatted away going from one horse to the next, talking about anything that’s happened since he saw them last, I forgot to point out when we got to the sensitive horse.  So she got the Rhino/flu along with the rest.

Last year my other vet (also chiro & dentist) who is into alternative treatments gave me a homeopathic called Thuja and I planned on giving it after the intranasal.  So I gave her some immediately (Thursday) and the next day (Friday).  Previously the reaction had showed up the next day and Friday night, all was still good.

But this morning 2 of the 6 are sore on the Rhino etc side (not the WNV side) – more sensitive and will flinch away from touch, but if we approach gently, will allow touch with a fair amount of pressure.  One horse (the one I was most worried about) does have some swelling above the injection site, but nothing specifically at the site and no heat.

So how does an absess show up?  I’ve never had one, and of course the recent conversation about shots on top of the rump being worrisome because an absess can’t drain has me in yet another panic.  I’m not terribly concerned by what I’ve seen so far – and have talked to the vet as he wanted me to call him even if nothing happened and he’s not worried either.

He used betadine to clean before the injections but I know my horses were not very clean.  I do feel that the Thuja made a huge difference as the one horse is waaaay better off than last year.  So that may be of some use for those that have had issues before and have access to someone with homeopathic qualifications.

If there is anything someone can share about preventing an absess at this point or what to watch for and what to do if we get one, I would sure appreciate it since we are now in the middle of the weekend!

Thanks,

Marlene
