[RC] Forced vaccinations - Kathleen

Title: Forced vaccinations

I had a gelding with a propensity to sarcoids.  When I first got him he was  boarded.  He got all his vaccinations in one day in the spring.  A few days later huge angry ugly sarcoids erupted between his front and back legs.  My vet felt the vaccines had compromised his immune system and allowed the virus that causes sarcoids to get out of control.  He recommended that I not ever vaccinate the gelding again.  He felt a mature (7 yo) horse did not necessarily need to be vaccinated.  It took 4 years to get rid of the sarcoids the vaccinations caused in that one day.

I have to wonder why humans are given childhood vaccines and then vaccinated for very few things as adults but we are told to vaccinate our animals for everything every year of their lives.  I am not questioning the value of some vaccinating but I am really questioning the frequency of vaccinations animals are exposed to.  I thought I read somewhere that there may be a connection between thyroid problems in older horses and over vaccinating.

If my horse were as sensitive as yours is I would find a new place to board.  If you look at the worst case scenario you could lose the horse to a severe reactionno boarding facility is that nice.
