Re: [RC] teaching a horse to pony - Chris Paus

In addition to all the good advice given here,I'd like to add, sometimes a horse who leads well still balks at the first few ponying attempts. I like to ride the horse in a circle with the ponied horse. It's sometimes hard to move a horse straight ahead, but ask it to turn and it will go. You can make bigger and bigger circles until the horse gets it and then you can go straight.

hi heidi,   work in the round pen, arena, or any area that is somewhat enclosed and familiar to you.   like someone said,  make sure the horse you want to pony will lead well, go past obstacles, etc.  you know how to do this.    get your pony horse accustomed to having a lead rope dragged across his butt.  ride him around just dragging the rope, or you can tie some object to the rope.  maybe a sack with a little sand in it just to have a little weight.  be creative.  do it enough to get the pony horse used to the feel of the rope and used to having something following closely.   then work with the two horses together.   hold the lead rope, dont tie it on you or your saddle.  keep the ponied horse close to the pony horse.  i like to start with them practically side by side, just keep the ponied horse slightly behind.  work with it. it can be fun.       cowboy ed
