RE: [RC] Homeopathics - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.

Two of the horses I euthanized last summer for West Nile belonged to owners
who used homeopathic remedies in lieu of vaccinating and lost the bet. I do
NOT advocate skipping vaccines for the diseases with a reasonable likelihood
of death (western, Eastern encephalitis, tetanus, west nile virus, rabies in
endemic areas), but I'm not adverse to skipping the flu/rhino if that's your
preference. It doesn't absolutely prevent the disease, just decreases the
effects if they do get it, and it is one of the vaccines that cause more
soreness than others (the Fort Dodge WNV causes very little, IME).
Personally, I usually administer it in the pectoral muscles and get much
less soreness than when administered in the neck or rump.

The exception is for a pregnant mare---EHV (rhino) commonly causes fetal
death if the mare is not properly vaccinated.

Sorry, I've seen no indication that homeopathics are a reasonable substitute
for the potentially lethal diseases, and I'd be open to it if I thought it
was. Weigh your relative disadvantages. Vaccines cause some muscle
soreness, but the disease can cause death.

Subject: [RC] Homeopathics

Hi All,

I'm interested in any feedback from those of you that have successfully
used homeopathics instead of vaccinations. I have a mare who becomes
either sick (off her feed, lethargic) and/or lame in the rear (herpes
point in the rump need to be cleared with an amino) from the Rhino
vaccine. The lameness in the rear, caused by the pain in those herpes
points, has now popped up several times in the last year -- It's been
one year since I last did Rhino. I will not try another Rhino vaccine
manufacturer as I know someone who did this and her mare still became
ill. In short, I'd like to not give any spring/fall shots, or West Nile
vaccine, as there are homeopathics to cover all. I have used
homeopathics on my personal self and believe in them, I've just never
tried them on my animals.

Thoughts?

Thank you!
